Studying at OTEN has made a huge difference in my life by allowing me to be one step closer to achieving my long term goal of working in the United Arab Emirates. The flexibility of the study mode worked perfectly around my work and additional study load to complete the Human Resources Management Diploma in under 12 months. Obtaining this Diploma meant that I was able to enter University to be able to complete the last stages of my study before I am officially qualified to enter the Emirates as a qualified professional. If it wasn’t for the flexibility and the easy access of the study material and resources through OTEN, I wouldn’t have been able to complete my studies due to my working hours, location and transportation within this timeframe and/or maybe not at all. My long term goal is to work in the Emirates as a bilingual Arabic/English speaker within the Human Resources field.
Thank you so much OTEN!

I have a 4 year old daughter and whilst she was at preschool last year, I decided to study Cert III in Children’s Services. Not only did I want a career change, but I also wanted to learn and understand in-depth how my little girl was developing and growing, both physically and emotionally.
Studying Cert III opened up a new career path for me. It also strengthened my bond with my daughter. I better understood (and tolerated!) her during the testing times, and I was able to provide her with new play experiences at home based on her interests.
I conducted my work experience at a Montessori preschool, as she attends one of these. By doing this, I was able to learn more about the school’s philosophy and bring some of their ideas into our home life.
I’m so glad I made the effort as now if I have baby no. 2, I won’t worry that I’ve forgotten how to change a nappy!
Thanks OTEN for all your support.

When I started studying again I thought it would be a good way to gain some new skills and expand my mind. I never thought it would become a way of life for me. I now see weeds all the time and sigh because I cant kill them all.
I joined up the with the local land care group and soon found that all I had learnt was easy to put into practise. I then organised another group and called it the splinter land care group.
Before I stared studying I had lost everything and felt my life was going to be a struggle through the hum drum until the end. But now I’m excited that I know so much more about the environment and that I am still learning everyday. I feel that I’m a new person with a great outlook.
I may not be able to stop all the invasive species in NSW but you have to start somewhere, every weed you kill is one less to produce seeds.
Becoming someone new is very exciting.

I was lucky enough to gain a job as a Community Care Coordinator in aged and disability while i was still completing my Diploma in Community Services. In my job i have learnt so much and gained a lot of experience with knowledge of various packages and dealing with a broad range of clients and their needs. I was so nervous when i first started in this job as i was still learning so many aspects of the job. Now i can confidently say that my knowledge base has grown so much in the last 14 months and i now partcipate in various activities around the office, such as being the first aid officer for the office, mentoring non-english speaking support workers, health and wellbeing group, known around the office as providing a bit of fun and laughter and have a healthy case load of my own clients. I love what i do and i love that i am able to provide the quality of care and knowledge to my clients and offer my experiences to support workers and other work collegues. I found studying through oten a pleasant and professional experience and would recommend them to anyone. Thank you

As my high school career ended, I was terrified. I was a child...
As my high school career ended, I was terrified. I was a child who took easily to illness, and was shy in social situations. This led to me hardly being involved in any activities or socialization outside of the school gates. I have never spent a night away from home and my parents. Obviously, university was not going to be a viable option to me. But neither could I jump straight into the workforce. I felt woefully unprepared for the ‘real world’.
But then I happened to discover OTEN. Here was a platform that was perfect for me! I could easily do my courses online, from the comfort and privacy of my own home. Here was a place where I could gain the skills, and thereby gain the confidence, I would need to succeed in the workforce.
Since 2013 I have completed three OTEN courses; two in Business and one in Information Technology. I am now starting another course, putting me on the path to becoming a librarian. I am so grateful and appreciative to the teachers, students and other staff that have made my journey a pleasure to undertake. I no longer fear the future. Thank you.

Without OTEN my family and I wouldn’t have a future so bright.
In 2009 a fire at a business beside my husbands business caused an unforeseen chain of events that changed not just the life of my family, but the life of those we associated and did business with. The insurance company paid us less than ¼ of our loss and will not pay the rest until they discover how the fire next door started. We lost hundreds of thousands. I became the sole income provider of our family of 5. I did everything possible to keep us afloat. We lost our super to save our home, we accepted food parcels to feed our children, vouchers to pay our electricity, I even worked 3 months FIFO to sustain our family. I did my own tax and discovered, I had supported our family on $200 a week! I still don’t know how!!
In June / July 2013, due to my low income I was allowed to receive a discount on my Certificate IV in WHS / OHS via centrelink. After completion this allowed me to move on to applying for and completing a Diploma in OHS within 3 weeks with distinction. I had discovered my niche` and finally knew my career path.
I am currently completing a diploma in Quality Auditing and environmental studies with Penn State University via correspondence in the US. I am eagerly awaiting a response from Easternwell regarding a step forward in my career as a HSE Advisor, my short term goal. My long term goal is as a Lead Quality Auditor.
At 40, OTEN has shown me I can balance children, hardship and begin a career, that at the end of a dark tunnel, there is light! OTEN has given me hope - Thank you is not enough.

Hi, I’m Stephen Hughes and I’m “NOW a FIRE FIGHTER” with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services since December 2013. Over the past five years I’ve had many a disappointment trying to become a fire fighter because it’s so competitive. Until, I studied Certificate 2, Public Safety, Fire Fighting Operations with OTEN. I’m a family man with 6 children and working but, because of the flexibility OTEN gave me I was able to complete the course in 18 months approx. Many a time I’d get set up to study at the kitchen table only to have to pack everything up for family reasons. Because OTEN allowed me to study on my own terms and gave me plenty of time I was able to complete my course. The help I received from the fire fighting section at OTEN was excellent, they would always get back to me and nothing seemed a problem for them. I applied for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Fire and Rescue NSW and because of the course I completed with OTEN, I could prove I had the ability to complete the study to become a fire fighter. In the end I successfully gained entry into both fire services, giving me a choice. My family and I decided on Queensland. We are now all gaining from the benefits of my new career. Oh yes, I don’t study on kitchen table anymore, I now have a study where I can study anytime and don’t have to pack up. Thanks you OTEN, I now have a career in the job I love helping people in our community.

After working in the finance industry for 10years I knew the time had come to make a change in my life. I was becoming unhappy in what had become a stressful and demanding job. I felt that in the latter part of my working life I should be happy and content, not feeling frustrated and agitated.
I had worked in Family Day Care in the office for 8 years and knew that I loved being around children. I made a decision, quit my job, and signed up with OTEN to complete Certificate III in Children’s Services.
When I was doing the module about Children At Risk I was completely unprepared for the emotion that overtook me and I struggled to get through it. When I sent in my assignment I disclosed my feelings to the teacher and told her I had often thought about foster caring. The feedback that I received from this teacher was positive and encouraging and it has now led me down another path in my life.
In addition to working casually in the childcare industry, I have now been approved to do respite foster caring and I do my final training in March.

Benefits of a Cert IV in OH&S
In July 2012 I was employed as a Marine Superintendant with Offshore Maritime Services Alliance (OMSA) on the Gorgon Oil and Gas Project in NW Australia.
With over 14 vessels and more than 100 crew on site it became immediately apparent that OH&S management would be a major focus of the position.
I commeneced a Cert IV in OH&S in 2012 and even before completeing late last year, as a result of what I learnt I was able to provide valuable input resulting in an overall improvement in the Company’s OH&S performance on site. This ultimately culminated in an award for excellence in operations being presented by the Chevron site management.
Word of our success in OH&S has spread and I am now receiving regular approaches from other companies within the oil and gas sector to similarly assist them.
