Course description
Our Student Welfare course provides the skills and knowledge for existing chaplains and student welfare workers to achieve the minimum two units of competency required by the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program.

There are no entry requirments for this course.
Note: Candidates for this course should be existing chaplains or student welfare workers.
Credit (or recognition) for modules/units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences. For more information on Credit for this course please refer to 'If you have the skills, get credit for a unit or this course' below.
Please note: Some industries have their own legislative or licensing requirements. TAFE NSW recognition does not apply to these.

Work placement in NSW Health Facilities
National Criminal Record Check
Before you undertake work placement in a NSW Health facility you will be required to undertake a Criminal Record Check (CRC) to obtain a National Police Certificate, either through a state or territory police service or through the Australian Federal Police.
If you have any criminal records, you will be subject to a risk assessment and must obtain an authority to undertake clinical placements from your state Department of Health.
Student Undertaking
You will be required to read and sign the NSW Health Student Undertaking, agreeing to notify the NSW Health if you are charged or convicted of any criminal offence after the date of issue of your National Police Certificate or during the completion of your course.
Volunteer/Student Declaration
Before commencing each clinical work placement in a Health facility you will be required to sign and provide a NSW Commission for Children and Young People Volunteer/Student Declaration. This form declares that you are not prohibited from working with children and young people.
Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Disease
NSW Health requires students to undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases. Before commencing work placement you will have to provide NSW Health with your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.
Please note that these requirements may take several months to complete and you will be required to pay for your Criminal Record Check screening and any necessary immunisations.
NSW Health Code of Conduct
Before you undertake clinical work placement in a NSW Health facility, you are required to have read the NSW Code of Conduct and sign a form stating that you have read and understood it.

The working with children check
Students may be required by their workplace to sign a ‘Volunteer/student declaration’. Follow this link for more information about the working with children check.

Students outside of NSW will be required to refer to their own state/territory working with children agency.
Criminal Record Check
Students may be required by their workplace to undertake a Criminal Record Check (CRC) to obtain a National Police Certificate, either through a state or territory police service or through the Australian Federal Police. Please note that this check may take several weeks to complete and students will be required to pay for their own Criminal Record Check.
Gaining the working with children check and criminal record check are the responsibility of the student.
Under 17 and wanting to leave school?
If you are under 17 and want to leave school, your options have been affected by a recent change in NSW law. From January 2010 you must complete Year 10 and then continue in either full-time education, training, paid employment or a combination of these options until you’re at least 17 years of age. More information about options for school students under 17 is available from the NSW Department of Education and Communities - The new school leaving age.

To complete the units in this qualification you will need a computer with a CD/DVD drive, broadband connection to the Internet and an active email account.

Assessment for this qualification is by the successful completion of work submitted by you to us on a regular basis. Assessment requirements may also include:
• completion of worksheets
• assessment work that may need to be conducted in the workplace and/or accessing workplace documents.
It is the responsibility of students to organise their own agency for work placement. This is to meet the work place learning requirements and on-the-job assessments of this qualification. OTEN is not responsible for the arrangement of work placement, securing a workplace Supervisor and/or providing access to any workplace resources.
